On leaving the top third empty.

When I started leaving the top third of my frames empty, people called it wasted space. I think it is the opposite: it is space given back to the viewer.

Negative space as a kind of generosity to the viewer.

A full frame tells you what to look at. An open frame lets you stand inside the picture and choose. The subject stays small, the air stays large, and the photograph becomes a place instead of a statement.

Try it with one roll: put everything you love in the bottom two thirds, and let the rest stay quiet.
