Light

Why I wait 30 minutes after sunrise before pressing the shutter.

The first light is loud. It comes in sharp and orange and asks you to react. I used to shoot it immediately, and most of those frames look nervous now — hurried exposures of something that had not settled yet.

The first light is loud.

Wind, light & a slow walk

So I started waiting. Thirty minutes after sunrise, the color calms down, the shadows grow longer and softer, and the scene stops performing. That is the second light. It is quieter, and it is honest.

Waiting also changes me. By the time I raise the camera, I have already seen the place breathe for a while. I press the shutter less, and keep more.

If your morning pictures feel loud, try arriving at the same time — but keep the lens cap on for half an hour. Let the light come to you.
